Oakland County International Airport

Master Plan Update

Waterford, Michigan

Oakland County International Airport (PTK) is located in Pontiac, MI, and is a reliever to Detroit Metro Airport and is part of the greater-Detroit metropolitan area. PTK is one of the busiest airports in the Country. It’s a general aviation airport with significant amounts of corporate and cargo aircraft activity. Oakland County International is home to the DaimlerChrysler aviation department, among others.

Oakland County International is a beehive of activity. A mature and landlocked facility, establishing the planning actions necessary to fine tune this airport’s maximum through-put required a delicate balance of creativity and compromise. Barnard Dunkelberg & Company was retained to prepare this master plan update. The theme of this planning process was to “make the best use of a very limited resource.”

No acquisition of land was recommended in the master plan update; all fixes to optimize the airport’s performance and compatibility were to be accomplished within the airport’s existing boundaries. On-airport land use reallocations were the core study recommendations to fine tune the airport to achieve the following: optimize runway length, increase aircraft storage facilities, remove non-standard airfield conditions, reduce aircraft run-up noise, better screen the airport from it neighbors and to relocate/place critical airport facilities.
