King County International Airport/ Boeing Field (BFI) is located in Seattle, Washington and is delivery location for all Boeing company narrow-body aircraft. Boeing Field regularly accommodates aircraft ranging from Cessna single engine aircraft to the Boeing 747-400. Air cargo operations also play a significant role in the daily operations at King County International.

King County International Airport may be the most densely developed airport in the country. Its 594 acres is a complex mix of mostly industrial aviation, general aviation corporate flight departments and air cargo activity. The planning phrase “maximum through-put,” should have been coined to describe the landside of Boeing Field.

Barnard Dunkelberg & Company was retained to complete an airport master plan for this intriguing airport. Project focus was primarily landside development/redevelopment alternatives. Precious little land was undeveloped and the airport could not service its unconstrained growth forecasts.

Barnard Dunkelberg & Company recommended a landside development plan that encouraged accommodation of the existing aviation use types to the greatest extent possible for future facility development. This approach optimizes the requirements of the airport’s mission statement to support the broadest mix of aviation uses for the King County Airport. This approach further advocated allowing as much flexibility as possible to respond to the ever-changing needs of the diverse general aviation markets that compete for the limited space at Boeing Field. The development plan identifies the “best” places for the various accommodated aviation components.

  • Eastside Development recommendations include Small General Aviation, Large General Aviation/Corporate Aviation, Terminal Facilities and Air Cargo
  • Airside Development recommendations include improved Airport Instrument Approach capabilities to maximize Capacity and The use of Runway Declared Distances to enhance safety.
