Kodiak Airport is located approximately four miles southwest of downtown Kodiak and supports air carrier service for the City of Kodiak, in addition to serving as a regional hub for several outlying communities, and serving as a facility for U.S. Coast Guard aviation operations The Airport is located adjacent to the Kodiak U.S. Coast Guard Base and is on U.S. Coast Guard property that is leased by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF), who operates and maintains the Airport. In addition to Kodiak Airport, the city is served by three smaller general aviation airports including: Kodiak Municipal Airport, Kodiak (Lily Lake) Seaplane Base, and Trident Basin Seaplane Base.

Kodiak Island is within the Gulf of Alaska, which is one of the most productive fishing grounds in the world. Aside from fishing and fish processing, the Island is a transportation hub for southwest Alaska, and home of the largest U.S. Coast Guard Base in the country. Kodiak Island is also home to the first truly commercial space satellite launch facility in the United States, the Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation Kodiak Launch Facility.

At present, three of the airport’s six runway ends do not meet standard safety area criteria – Runway 18, Runway 25, and Runway 36. The Barnard Dunkelberg & Company Team is working closely with the FAA to complete an Environmental Impact Statement for the airport runway safety areas incorporating FAA Orders 5200.8 and 5200.9.
